Hi Jeff,

I received a call this morning while I was driving through VA that Tubby died this morning. Debbie asked me to inform the 281st. Could you please notify everyone in the appropriate places? I never did not stay on the chat room. I spoke with the president of the 281st Association this weekend. We will most likely ask Jesse Aleman to speak at the memorial service and we will highlight Tubby as well.

We just arrived in MA this afternoon. I learned yesterday that my father is terminally ill. Hospice is being arranged today. The next few weeks are going to be difficult.

Subject: Tubby Brudvig Update

Hey guys, those of you who attended the last reunion got to listen to Wes Schuster describe the founding of our association by Tubby Brudvig, a former Wolf Pack CE. I still have the original letter Tubby sent me when I was living in Germany during their first reunion, how he got my address is a mystery to me but he did. To shorten this a bit Tubby has cancer, many of you know this. He's been undergoing treatment, that's not only not lots of fun but more often than not is not effective. It appears to be the case with Tubby as he went to the doc last week and was told the cancer has spread to the other side of his stomach. There are a lot of different cancers out there, this one sounds like it's about as bad as it can get, both from an outcome perspective but also from a quality of life aspect. Everyone dies, I just can't imagine losing my stomach before that happens.

Tubby is a stoic guy, he's not going to call us up and lament his fate. He would, however, probably appreciate some emails from a few of us. It makes no difference if you knew him or not, drop him an email or two, put 281st AHC in the subject line and he'll answer you. If you're on Facebook his wife is on there and provides minor updates daily. Tubby's a good guy, he flew with me and still talks to me which tells me something as I probably tried to do him in early on more than one occasion. He has a tablet and spends a fair amount of time answering emails, his address is: Brudvigdebnduane@aol.com .

Thanks,

Jeff

Spent some time with Tubby on the phone today and he sounds good and has a great outlook. A little weak from the meds bur Deborah is working on getting his strength back. My bet is that he will beat this thing and be at the reunion in Aug. Cards, letters & email is encouraged. Lets get him to Saint Louis.

Hi everyone,

Duane just finished his first session of chemo yesterday ( I was too tired to email last night ) The first day he had to be at the VA by 9 and we walked out of there at 5. Tues and Wed he had to be there by 9 and we got home around noon. the other 2 days are for his bone marrow. He is doing fantastic !! So happy to have him seem like himself again. He has alot of instructions to follow every day, drugs and to follow the rules. The hardest part will be when he has nothing to fight off with his immune system. So we know signs to look for. Monday I will learn to give him shots daily for his immune system. He is smiling, Hungary, not as tired and full of hope. We have no room for any one to be talking negative, and have to keep looking up. So, we are happy to say it went much better then we expected. PTL !!

Thank you everyone for all the calls, emails, visits, taking me to lunch when all day at the VA, frozen meals for the future, and mostly for all of the support and prayers !! The 281st sent a big surprise, so you guys all have to come to St. Louis in August in support !! Will keep you all in the know with how things are going. May 20 is his next session. We are so excited about people who are planning to come and visit, starting with Lee, Pat, Laurie, Matt, and Pam for Duane's birthday. ( maybe someone else ) Looking forward to our friends from Texas coming, soon also !!

Thankful for all of you in our lives,

Love you,

Debbie and Duane

Tubby Brudvig was one of my CE's, I got this news from Schuster and the crowd. What he has is tough to beat, prayers are in order for those that are so inclined.

I was emailed about this a few days ago but AT&T in their infinite wisdom shut down my internet, TV & phone a week early in anticipation of our move. I felt like a blind man in a strip joint.

Hi guys,

I don't know that I see you two on distribution so, I thought it best to send this along.

Tubby is in tough shape. It sounds real bad.

Jeff, Tubby was the first guy to communicate with the 281st guys many years ago about having a reunion. When he got ahold of me I could tell he needed some organizational help. Hence I put together the first few newsletters and helped with the first two reunions.

It would mean a tremendous amount to Tubby and his family to be recognized as the man who got it all started. I leave it to you to come up with the best way to do this. Soon.

Tubby was a great gunner. When you strapped yourself into the cockpit, you knew he had his shit together. Tubby is a good man. He cares about other people. He showed that to me by contacting his former door gunners family for their memorial service to honor him.

This really upsets me.

Wes

Hi everyone,

Here I am again, with now we know what is going going on with Duane. He does have Non - Hodgkin's Lymphoma, it is stage 4, inoperative, but fixable with drastic chemo. They found cancer throughout his entire body when they did the PET scan, yesterday. He also has it in his bone marrow. The doctors here thought they could start the chemo faster here then going to MD Anderson in Dallas. We are happy for them to get started as soon as possible. His cancer doctor goes to the VA as well as our huge cancer center here. We met with her also today. It will be a long haul but he will be here in the end of it !! It is a lot to soak in and has been a rough day. The doctor told him to get plenty of caps to wear cuz he will need them to cover his bald head , that he will be having. Duane is feeling depressed, so I encourage all of you to give a call or nod sometime. He did let the VA know today on, with the Agent Orange board to now add this to his list. ( those of you , who know are wondering ) So please continue to pray for Duane and his complete recovery and that the medicine doesn't cause trouble for his heart problems. It's a rough day but things can only get better.

Love all of you,

Debbie and Duane

A note from the Webmaster:

Tubby was the "Grandfather" of the 281st AHC Association. It was his idea and inspiration that lead to the first reunions of 281st veterans back in the 1980's. At that time the first of four newsletters were pinned by Wes Schuster and can be read on the Newsletter page on our website.

Get well Tubby. We need leaders like you.
