WO Daniel Edward Bishop was KIA when the helicopter he was piloting, UH-1B Gunship 63-08632, (Miss Oklahoma), was engaged by a hostel NVA force. His aircraft was struck by ground fire and SP-5 Mills, DG, & SP-4 Olivar, CE. SP/5 Charles F. Millay was also onboard. The crew was providing close air support for a combat assault mission north of Qui Nhon at LZ Alpha. The 145th was assigned to the 52nd AVN BN at the time  of their deaths.

At age 15, the second oldest of your nieces and nephews, I probably remember you the most. Your wit and humor kept all of us so happy. Your letters, even on your worst days, kept the hope in our hearts for your safe return. Even though you didn't come home, you helped so many others return to their families by flying those darn choppers into the danger zones to pick up the wounded and their units. We miss your wit and lovingly remember your "antics".

Please know that you have not been forgotten and always will hold a special place in my heart! It would have been nice to have known you as a person, and I greatly appreciate your service! I just wish you did not have to pay so high a price! You forever will be a hero in my eyes!

War Story:
19 April: Operation Quyet Thang 137 was conducted in support of the 22nd (ARVN) Div. The 119th Avn Co. joined other elements of the battalion in lifting 320 troops from Phu Cat to LZ Alpha (CR 099410) on the penisula north of Qui Nhon. An additional 100 troops were landed at LZ Bravo (CR 075495). Intense ground fire was received from LZ Alpha, and two armed UH-1Bs were shot down and expoded on impact. All crew members were killed. Four other aircraft were also hit with one additional crewman being killed.
