SMITTY'S RIDE
This is a picture that Ron Lohman took
when we were making one of those out-of -trim dives with a LRRP team on
an insertion. This could have been at Recondo School or in support of
some non-Delta LRRPs, but it was definitely an insertion. Note the IAS
of 115+ kts and rate of decent at 3000 fpm and the artificial horizon
tipped almost to Cobra nose down attitude. I think a lot of the guys
will relate to this snap shot of the instrument panel during an
insertion. Ed Young and John Wehr were among those that showed me how
to kick it out-of-trim and get it to fall like this without exceeding
the redline on IAS. I'm sure that I did some that were more than the
120 kts redline with descents in excess of 3000; especially if we were
going to miss the hole on the first try! Hope yall enjoy this one.
