Accident Summary:

While in flight, a loud explosion from the engine compartment was heard by all crew members and the aircraft immediately lost power. The aircraft commander entered an autorotation. At approximately 20 feet altitude, the pilot observed a high dike was across his intended touch down point. He pulled RPM off to clear the dike but was too low. The dike made contact with the skids resulting in a hard landing. Vane failure believed to be caused by the use of aviation gas.
