Accident Summary:
THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER AND HIS CREW WERE SCRAMBLED FROM DONG TAM, THEIR HOME BASE, AT OR ABOUT 1300 HOURS ON 4 FEBRUARY 1971. AFTER STARTING THE AIRCRAFT AND CHECKING THE RADIOS, THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER FOUND THE RADIOS WERE TOO WEAK TO CONDUCT HIS MISSION PROPERLY. HE INFORMED HIS UNIT OPERATIONS AND THEY GAVE HIM ANOTHER AIRCRAFT. AFTER A PREFLIGHT HE DISCOVERED THE AIRCRAFT HAD AN INOPERATIVE FM RADIO BUT DECIDED TO GO AHEAD WITH THE MISSION BECAUSE THE OTHER TWO ARMED HELICOPTERS HAD GOOD FM RADIOS. AFTER COMPLETING THE MISSION, ^CW2 MARTIN^ WAS TOLD TO RETURN TO CAO LANH, REARM, REFUEL, AND STAND BY IN CASE HE WAS NEEDED AGAIN THAT DAY.\\THERE WAS NO AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER ON DUTY AT CAO LANH ON 4 FEBRUARY 1971. BECAUSE OF THE HEAVY FLOW OF BOTH FIXED WING AND ROTOR WING AIRCRAFT, AND A CROSS WIND CONDITION, THE TRAFFIC AT THE AIRFIELD WAS NOT IN AN ORDERLY STATE WHEN ^CW2 MARTIN^ AND HIS CREW LANDED. AFTER LANDING AND HOVERING TO THE REARMING POINT AND REARMING HIS GUNSHIP, ^CW2 MARTIN^ ELECTED TO HOVER BACK TO THE ACTIVE RUNWAY TO GO TO THE POL FOR FUEL. HOWEVER, AS ^CW2 MARTIN^ APPROACHED THE ACTIVE IN A NEAR IFR CONDITION HE WAS UNABLE TO SEE THE VNAF BIRD DOG TAKING OFF. WHEN ^CW2 MARTIN^ SAW THE FIXED WING AIRCRAFT, A MID-AIR COLLISION APPEARED INEVITABLE. ^CW2^ INSTINCTIVELY APPLIED AFT CYCLIC. THE TAIL SKID MADE CONTACT WITH THE GROUND, BENDING IT TO THE DEGREE THAT THE TAIL ROTOR HIT THE GROUND. THE 90-DEGREE GEAR BOX WAS SEPARATED FROM THE AIRCRAFT RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF ANTI-TORQUE CONTROL. THE AIRCRAFT STARTED TO SPIN TO THE RIGHT AND ^CW2 MARTIN^ STATED THAT HE ROLLED OFF THROTTLE. ^CW2 MARTIN^ WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN THE AIRCRAFT IN A LEVEL ATTITUDE AND THE LEFT SYNCHRONIZED ELEVATOR MADE CONTACT WITH THE GROUND. THE MAIN ROTOR THEN STRUCK THE GROUND CAUSING THE TRANSMISSION TO BE TORN FROM THE ENGINE.\\ FROM THE TIME ANTI-TORQUE CONTROL WAS LOST UNTIL THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST, THE AIRCRAFT SPUN 270-DEGREES. ONCE ON THE GROUND ^CW2 MARTIN^ ATTEMPTED TO COMPLETE ENGINE SHUT DOWN BUT WAS UNABLE TO ROLL THE THROTTLE PAST THE FLIGHT IDLE DETENT. ^CW2 MARTIN^ TURNED OFF THE BATTERY AND INSURED THAT THE CREW MOVED AWAY FROM THE AIRCRAFT IN THE EVENT OF FIRE. THE ENGINE DIED AFTER APPROXIMATELY 20 SECONDS.\\
