Jeff Murray

Jeff
Well, who would have imagined the plaque would ever be full up; no more empty slots.

Wes Schuster:

"I’d like to talk a little about the 281st IOTY award. This plaque has 22 separate plates. Each plate signifies the person and the year that person was the recipient of the award.

It started in 2001 and ended in 2022. Some of the past recipients are Jack Mayhew, Jay Hays, Paul Malady, Walter Pikul, Frank Becker, Jim Baker, Bain Black, Brent Gourley, Marshall Hawkins and Dean Roesner to name a few of the 22 people who received this award. I received this award in 2022 and I am the last person to receive it and there aren’t anymore spaces planned on the plaque.

In the last couple of years, we have been simplifying several issues in our association. We have a smaller Executive Board, we have fewer members and we decided it was time to simply retire the IOTY award.

One of the problems we have in downsizing, is what to do with our extensive collection of memorabilia and intellectual property. So, the question is “WHAT DO WE DO WITH THE IOTY AWARD”?

We have come to a solution. We have two spaces on the top of the name plates. Let me explain the two plates that have been added. For those of you who were at the first reunion in 1986 my good friend, Dwane “Tubby” Brudvig, was the original organizer of that reunion and we awarded him a plaque for his efforts, a mini IOTY award if you will. So, on the top left we have inscribed Tubby’s name and the year 1986 as the first IOTY.

On the right top we have added a plate with the name who best typifies our main mission of the 281st AHC Association, to promote and maintain our camaraderie. Not only has he promoted camaraderie for many years, he served as our secretary for as long as I can remember, he has been our president for the last two years and kept us together financially during the loss of our treasurer. The last recipient of the IOTY award goes to Jeff Murray.

Jeff, I have seen your collection of military memorabilia in your home and I can think of no one more deserving to keep it in good condition for years to come."

Honorary Member Kelly, pictured here with Earl Broussard, the 2004 recipient, is the first person to receive the Intruder of the Year Award who was not a veteran of the 281st AHC. Kelly is the daughter of Jack Mayhew, Commander of the 281st AHC in 1967-68 and former President of this association. Kelly has worked tirelessly during the reunion planning process and during the past reunions in the PX area. She has devoted many hours of her own time in researching KIA's and MIA's as well as her 281st AHC Wall Project in Washington, DC.

Jay, holding the well deserved 2006 Intruder of the Year Award. Long time member Jay has been an invaluable asset to the Association through his dedicated support of the PX. From our Las Vegas reunions onwards you would always find Jay devoting countless hours insuring that the PX and Hospitality Suite were running smoothly. Now serving as Vice President, Jay will advance to the Presidency in 2007-08. Congratulations Jay, you truly deserve the award.
